Outdoor therapy: How to start your journey to feeling better

What is outdoor therapy?

Outdoor therapy, sometimes called ‘walk and talk therapy’, involves therapy sessions which are outside. Unlike more ‘traditional’ therapy sessions, they do not involve sitting in an enclosed space.

Instead, therapists will choose peaceful spaces such as local nature footpaths to meet you for your session. The sessions will involve walking and/or sitting outdoors. However, you and your therapist will decide what feels best for you both.

What are the benefits of outdoor therapy?

  • It can sometimes feel less scary and awkward to be walking or sitting alongside your therapist. For some, this can feel better than facing them in an enclosed space.
  • It’s well-known that exercise and fresh air benefits our well-being. Yet, many of us struggle to get this in our daily lives. Outdoor therapy will be a dedicated time in the week for you to enjoy the added benefits of being outside and exercising.
  • Physically moving and changing our environment can help us to feel less ‘stuck’ in our lives and to gain different perspectives.
  • Observing and hearing nature can have a calming and grounding effect on our emotions.
  • The sounds of nature can feel less intense than being in a silent room.
  • Some people can think clearer or feel calmer when they are moving rather than being sat in one place.

FAQs

Who is outdoor therapy for?

Anyone who feels that they would like to try it!

What happens if the weather is bad?

Most therapists will talk with you to see what feels comfortable and explore what options are available. For me personally, I am happy to go out with clients in any weather conditions provided that it feels safe! If you do not feel comfortable or there are safety concerns, we can explore the options of having our sessions in another way. It is always advisable for you to be prepared with waterproofs, layers and appropriate footwear.

What about confidentiality?

Together with your therapist, you will decide on different confidentiality measures for when certain situations arise e.g. passing members of the public or seeing someone that you or your therapist knows.

Do I need to be fit to do outdoor therapy?

You will decide the pace of the walk, how much walking is involved (this could be none!) with your therapist based on what feels most comfortable/doable for you. Your therapist will aim to walk at your pace and, if you would like, there will be opportunities to have seated breaks. Equally, if you would prefer to sit rather than walk, you and your therapist can decide on a place to sit outdoors.
